• Only Connect

Alexander Technique and Craniosacral Therapy with Daska Hatton

“Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon.”

“She might be able to help him to the building of the rainbow bridge that should connect the prose in us with the passion.  Without it we are meaningless fragments, half monks, half beast, unconnected arches that have never been joined into a man.”  EM Forster – Howards End

We are never just our thoughts, or our feelings or our sensations, but a fluctuating combination of all of these and more at the same time and the more that we can connect to these different levels the more we can “live in fragments no longer”.  Your body is not a machine and only you know what it feels like.  I can show you an efficient way of moving and at the same time together we can start to listen.

Some may come to see me because of very specific and particular problems such as frozen shoulder or sciatica.  Alternatively, I might see someone because they feel stuck in a particular phase in their lives or have a problem that they would like to try to explore from a different angle.  In either case, I will start by attending to what the body is saying and the work will begin from there.  There are undeniably bodily aspects of emotional disorders and psychological aspects of physical disorders and it can be useful to relate to these other levels.

As a Craniosacral therapist or an Alexander Technique Teacher my aim is to try to encourage my pupil or client to discover a new relationship to his or her particular problem.  This new relationship attempts to bring together the complexities of our thoughts and our emotions and our bodily senses.  We all know or have experienced times when there is a difference between our feelings and thoughts and our expressions, for example when we smile when we are in fact angry.  The work is not about trying to avoid conflicting feelings, ideas or concerns –  it is about understanding them in all their manifestations, and beginning to balance them.
